2002 FLORIDA

Saturday 20th July

Left Murfreesboro about 7.30 and had to go to Walmart for sunglasses as I lost mine at Cheri and Ken's place yesterday. We said our goodbyes to those who were left at the hotel ..... always a sad thing to do. Lorilyn came with us instead of waiting for the bus so we have her company for a little longer.

We had a smooth journey except for one little hitch when the warning sound for the tyres came on. We stopped, checked the tyres and they seemed fine so we checked again at the first tyre place we came to. All was well so we continued on our way. We spent the night at a Super 8 motel ..... only about $20 each so the price was right. However the smoke alarms kept bleeping and we had to end up taking the batteries out to get some sleep ..... sort of defeats the purpose of having them.

We managed to pick up a state trooper on our travels and he obliged with a picture.

Sunday 21st July

Drove from Maddison to St. Augustine, dropping Lorilyn off on the way just outside Jackson. They say you learn something new every day. Well today's lesson was that
the Suwanee River is the correct spelling and not Swanee River as is popularly thought.

It rained a bit today but cleared up as we got nearer St. Augustine. There is an interesting mix of rich and poor houses side by side.

The St. Johns River is very pretty and very wide. The St. Johns River (commonly misspelled as the St. John's River) is the longest river in the U.S. state of Florida, stretching 310 miles (500 km) from Indian River County to the Atlantic Ocean in Duval County. The St. Johns river is the longest river in the United States that flows north. It was designated as one of the American Heritage Rivers in 1997.

The Pirate haus hostel was interesting and our room was quite nice. As this was Kam's first experience of hostelling i thought it best if we had a private room and not the usual dormitory style. Bob the owner was very nice and showed us a good place to park which was close by.

When we were settled in we went out for a walk around and absorbed the atmosphere of the place. it is a bit like being in Spain itself with the small narrow streets and alley ways. We had a nice meal and a local brew at a hotel facing the sea front. great view of the place.
